Petroleum Facts
How is it created/refined?
Petroleum is formed from the remains of dead sea creatures. The heat and pressure applied on the remains causes it to become petroleum.
How does it work?
After the oil is drilled, it's refined through the process of fractional distillation. In this, there are 3 steps. First, the oil is separated into its naturally occurring components through distillation. Then the oil is heated in the distillation tower. The temperature decreases as the vapor rises in the tower and condenses, leaving the gas at the top and liquid at the bottom.
What's the cost to install?
The cost to produce one barrel ranges from $8.50 to $53.50. It varies depending on the country.
What are its benefits and drawbacks?
Benefits: 71% is used for transportation, it can be extracted easily, its high density makes it have more energy, can support constant power use, there's an abundance of it
Drawbacks: Expensive, nonrenewable, creates water/air pollution, frequent oil spills
Drawbacks: Expensive, nonrenewable, creates water/air pollution, frequent oil spills
Interesting Facts
1. The US has the 10th largest oil reserve in the world with 33 billion, while Venezuela has the first largest with 298.35 billion barrels.
2. Crude oil, although easy to transport due to its liquid form, can result in oil spills from fuel tankers and offshore drills. This can be very harmful to our environment and marine life.
3. Crude oil is petroleum before its fine. It comes with a very strong odor and is a dark colored liquid.
4. It's estimated that the worldwide oil production will continue to increase for the next 30 years.
5. 80% of all oil spills are a result of human error.
